My recent article, “The Constitution’s Negative Effects on Free Trade,” makes the case that the U.S. Constitution actually led to higher tariffs. Some states imposed across the bord tariffs on interstate and international commerce. While the U.S. Constitution eliminated these interstate tariffs, the tariffs on international commerce in many cases increased (almost immediately). Within a generation of the Constitution’s illegitimate approval, the tariff rate was in some cases 3 times higher on international commerce. Check out my recent article for more.
